Marbling
and Decorating
Students
at all
levels,
ages 12
through
adult,
will learn
the art
of paper
marbling,
paste
papers
and stamp
art. Students
will go
home with
at lease
a dozen
works
of art
using
many different
patterns
and color
schemes.
They will
also be
given
materials
suppliers
and directions
for doing
more projects
on their
own. Maximum
class

Origami
and Other
Fun Books
Beginners,
ages 12
to adult,
interested
in book
arts will
learn
simple
accordion
and other
interesting
folded
designs.
Students
will have
an opportunity
to use
the papers
they created
in class
1 in their
book projects.
Students
will go
home with
at least
four different
books,
suitable
for gifts,
Christmas
ornaments,
and special
messages.
Half day
class.

Beginning-Intermediate
Book Repair
Students
aged 16
to adult
will learn
basic
repair/mending
techniques
in order
to restore
damaged
books.
Participants
are encouraged
to bring
books
from their
own libraries.
Some areas
to be
covered
include:
hinge
repair,
numerous
paper
mending
techniques,
corner
strengthening,
cosmetics,
and paper
cleaning
and leather
repair.
Intermediate
class
examines
rebacking
and leather
repairs.
1-2 day
class.
Materials

Miniature
Books
Students
at all
levels,
ages 16
to adult,
who love
small
things
will enjoy
making
two tiny
books
during
this one
day class.
Projects
could
include
a small
book and
slip-case,
book pin
jewelry,
matchbox
book earrings.

Sun
Book and
Clam Shell
Box
Students
at all
levels
of experience
will construct
a Japanese
non-adhesive
binding
structure
that transforms
from a
book into
a sun
into a
mobile
star.
The accompanying
clam-shell
box fits
the book
exactly.
Students
are encouraged
to come
with poems
or other
ideas
to fill
the seven
pages
of text.
We will
explore
stamp
art, hot
gold stamping
and some
decorative
gold tooling.
Maximum
8 students.
Two day
class.

Tree
Book and
Triangular
Clam Shell
An enchanting
variation
on the
book and
box format.
Students
at all
levels
of experience
will construct
a non-adhesive
binding
in the
shape
of a tree.
Book can
be tied
in the
open position
to create
a freestanding
tree.
The triangular
box fits
the tree
exactly
and provides
an opportunity
to create
a box
structure.
Variations
and ways
to decorate
the tree
will be
explored.
Decorative
techniques
using
24K gold
foil will
be demonstrated.
6-hour
class.

Handbound
Journal
Students
construct
a traditional
signature
sewn book.
Concepts
addressed
will be
sewing,
endbands,
rounding
and backing,
case making,
hanging
in, end
sheets.
Some decorative
techniques
will be
explored
including:
type setting
for hot
gold stamping,
gold tooling,
onlays
and inlays,
and relief
designs.
Two day
class.

Advanced
Classes
Leather
Bound
Journal
Students
with experience
will create
a leather
bound,
hand sewn
journal.
This class
focuses
on the
use of
leather
as an
inviting,
soft,
durable,
sculptable
for the
covers
of books.
Students
will learn
to sew,
round
and back,
turn corners,
and complete
their
journals.
Some decorative
techniques
will be
explored
such as
blind
and gold
tooling,
raised
cords,
relief
designs
and onlays
on the
covers.
Two to
three
day class.
Materials

Book
of Devices
Intermediate
and advanced
students
will learn
how to
incorporate
artwork
of all
kinds
into their
books.
Students
will earn
to estimate
swell
and construct
for it,
as well
developing
techniques
for creating
art pieces.
Devices
include
Mylar
framed
pages,
pop-up
and movables,
fold-outs
and accordions,
envelopes,
vellum
overpaintings
and use
of other
decorative
techniques.
Class
limit:
8 students.

three
